At CM Church Ministries, we understand that Advent is a sacred season of preparation and reflection that holds deep significance for the congregational Methodist church. Encompassing the four Sundays leading up to Christmas, Advent is not just a countdown to the holiday; it represents a time of spiritual development and anticipation for the coming of Christ.
What Is Advent?
The Four Themes of Advent
Each of the four weeks of Advent highlights a particular theme: hope, peace, joy, and love. As we reflect on each theme, we invite congregations to engage in discussions and activities that deepen their understanding of these core values.
The History of Advent
Advent's origins date back to the 4th and 5th centuries when it served as a period of preparation for baptisms on the feast of Epiphany. Early Christians engaged in penance, prayer, and fasting for 40 days. Initially, Advent was unrelated to Christmas. By the 6th century, however, it became associated with the coming of Christ—not just his first arrival but also his second coming, as Christians eagerly awaited His return in glory.
Celebrating Advent Today
Today, many congregations, including those in the Congregational Methodist Church, celebrate Advent through various traditions, such as lighting Advent candles, participating in church services focusing on the themes, and using the Methodist curriculum to guide discussions and activities. Celebrating Advent connects believers to the historical church, enriching their faith journey.
Looking Forward to Epiphany
As Advent culminates in the joyous celebration of Christmas, it also transitions into the season of Epiphany, observed on January 6. Epiphany signifies Christ’s manifestation to the Gentiles, illustrated by the visit of the Magi. This celebration emphasizes that God's grace extends to everyone, reminding believers that Jesus is the Savior for all humanity, not just a specific group.
As we journey through Advent together, we invite you to engage with your community and deepen your understanding by utilizing our Methodist curriculum available at CM Church Ministries. Join us in worship services and discussion groups to share in the hope, peace, joy, and love of this season. Let’s prepare our hearts for Christ together!
